She had the Ivy League degree, the prestigious consulting job, and a social media feed that suggested she was winning.

But as she looked at the city lights, she felt a hollow, persistent ache. It wasn’t sadness—it was something colder. It was the feeling of being a pinball in a massive machine, bouncing off stress bumpers and digital pings, moving fast but going nowhere.

“I’m doing everything right,” she whispered. “So why does none of it matter?”

If this resonates, you are witnessing the hallmark of the modern age: the psychogenic epidemic.

The tripling of clinical depression among young adults since 2008 stems from a catastrophic famine of meaning rather than a lack of resources. We have prioritized the optimization of our "how-to" lives at the direct expense of our "why."

Today on the Passion Struck podcast, I am joined for a third time by Harvard professor and social scientist Arthur Brooks. In his profound new book, The Meaning of Your Life, Arthur dismantles the idea that happiness is a feeling to be chased. Instead, he reveals that meaning is a neurological and philosophical requirement that we have accidentally traded away for efficiency and technology.

Through this lens, you’ll learn that your sense of emptiness isn’t a malfunction—it’s a signal that your right brain is being neglected in a mechanistic world. Here is how to reclaim the mystery and find your way back to a life of significance.

Check Out My New Book

The Architecture of the Empty Soul

Arthur’s core insight is a wake-up call for the “striver” culture: we have become laterally hemispheric. We live in the left brain—the realm of logic, “how-to,” and technical mastery—while the right brain, the seat of “why,” love, and mystery, has been sidelined.

What you’re learning: Meaning isn’t a vague vibe; it has a specific three-part formula:

Coherence: Does your life make sense? Can you see the thread connecting your past, present, and future?

Purpose: Do you have goals that pull you forward?

Significance: Does your life actually matter to anyone else?

How to apply this: Stop asking “How can I be more productive?” and start auditing your coherence. Journal on this:

If my life were a book, what is the theme of the current chapter?

Am I acting as the protagonist, or am I just a prop in someone else’s script? Use this to see if your daily actions actually align with the story you want to tell.

Subscribe now

Breaking the “Simulation” of Tech

Arthur argues that technology has created a “simulation of real life.” We have banished boredom—the very thing that forces the brain to seek transcendence—and replaced it with a digital “random walk” that leads to profound loneliness.

What you’re learning: When we are constantly stimulated by devices, we lose the capacity for moral beauty—the awe we feel when seeing someone do something virtuous. This awe is a primary trigger for the right brain to experience meaning.

How to apply this: Practice digital asceticism. Pick one hour a day to be completely “un-optimized.” No scrolling, no “hacks.”

Walk outside and look for one act of moral beauty—a stranger helping another, or a moment of quiet discipline.

Notice how the absence of digital noise allows the “why” of your life to finally speak up.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" meaningful life without suffering. Meaning is often the waste product of the hard things we endure for the sake of love or a calling.

What you’re learning: There is a massive difference between pain and suffering. Suffering is often “pain plus resistance.” When we stop resisting the reality of our struggles and start looking for the transcendence within them, we find the significance we’ve been craving.

How to apply this: Identify a current struggle and reframe it from a “random bump” to a “path to significance.” Ask yourself:

Who can I serve through this struggle?

How does this difficulty make me more capable of experiencing love or helping others? You are not a machine to be fixed; you are a soul to be awakened. Shift your focus from self-determination to transcendence:

Identify the left-brain trap: Where are you over-analyzing the “how” and ignoring the “why”?

Commit to one act of significance: Do one thing today that has zero benefit for you but provides worth to someone else.

I’m on this path too—realizing that the most “productive” thing I can do isn’t checking another box, but sitting in the mystery of a life well-lived. When we follow the Dalai Lama’s lead and look for the 'enduring self,' we unlock the transformative power of Pure Unlimited Love.

In the summer of 2015, Dr. Stephen G. Post stood before a ballroom of neuroscientists and philosophers in Bangalore, India. He was there to talk about "the deeply forgetful"—his term for those lost in the fog of advanced dementia.

Post’s argument was essentially a social critique: he believed that Western society had fallen into a “hyper-cognitive” trap. We have decided, collectively and somewhat arbitrarily, that a person’s value is tied to their “mechanics”—their ability to recall a name, solve a puzzle, or use a fork. When those mechanics break, we assume the person is gone. We use terms such as “husk” or “shell.”

Then the Dalai Lama entered the room.

He didn’t wait for the Q&A. He simply interrupted. “There’s no reason to think less of somebody because they are memory impaired,” he said, looking around the room. “They still have creativity, they still have love. They can still enjoy the beautiful colors of the fall leaves.”

It was a profound moment of “thin-slicing.” In ten seconds, the Dalai Lama had identified the fatal flaw in Western neurology:

We have confused the hardware with the occupant.

This moment, recounted from my interview with Dr. Post about his book, Pure Unlimited Love: Science and the Seven Paths to Inner Peace, is more than a touching anecdote. It is a portal into a deeper truth about consciousness. In a world where AI debates rage over what constitutes a “mind” and elder care crises loom, Post’s story challenges us to rethink love not as a fleeting emotion, but as a disciplined force that transcends matter.

Subscribe now

The Mystery of the “Salty Joke”

If you want to understand what the Dalai Lama meant, you have to look at a phenomenon that researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and Stony Brook call Paradoxical Lucidity.

For decades, we’ve been told that dementia is a one-way street—a steady, irreversible erosion of the self. But when researchers began interviewing caregivers, they found something that didn’t fit the model. They found “blips.”

Consider the case of a daughter caregiving for her mother, who had been non-verbal and seemingly “absent” for years. In the middle of a routine afternoon, the mother suddenly looked her daughter in the eye and cracked a perfectly timed, salty joke.

To a neurologist, this is an impossibility. A joke requires “high-wire” cognitive computing: you have to understand social norms, recognize the exact moment to subvert them, and execute the delivery with wit. Most importantly, a “salty” joke requires a specific temperament—an edge, a sense of humor, a personality.

This single “blip” disproves the entire “husk” theory. It suggests that the person’s specific wit was never erased; it was merely behind a jammed door.

A recent national survey by the Gallup Organization suggests these aren’t just anomalies. Upwards of 44% of dementia patients experience these sudden returns to “self.” This creates a massive intellectual problem for the materialist view: If the brain is a computer and the hard drive is physically degraded, how can the software suddenly run perfectly for five minutes?

The answer, Dr. Post suggests, is that Mind Precedes Matter. The brain doesn’t produce consciousness; it is channeled through it. This echoes the Dhammapada: “Mind precedes all mental states. Mind is their chief; they are all mind-wrought.”

<picture><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!lxNS!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7f1e271a-4bad-4271-aaa7-7ea64ab06092_1024x608.png" width="1024" height="608" data-attrs="{"src":"https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/7f1e271a-4bad-4271-aaa7-7ea64ab06092_1024x608.png","srcNoWatermark":null,"fullscreen":null,"imageSize":"normal","height":608,"width":1024,"resizeWidth":null,"bytes":null,"alt":"A conceptual artistic overlay showing a glowing golden network of light surrounding a human silhouette and skeletal tree branches. It’s about the person sitting in the chair next to them.

When caregivers witness these moments of lucidity. When they see that “Mom is still there,” something shifts in their own biology. We’ve always been told that caregiving is a “burden.” It’s thankless and exhausting. However, Post’s research shows that caregivers who adopt a mindset of Pure Unlimited Love, who see the enduring soul rather than the broken mechanics, experience physiological improvements. These paths operationalize the “One Mind” theory into daily practice.

1. May You Give and Glow

Generous giving is the antidote to self-centeredness. This “helper’s high” turns grief into purpose. Dr. Post’s research reveals that widows who volunteer recover more robustly. Helping others is the most direct way to liberate the self.

2. May You Heal with Kindness

Kindness is a universal calling often lost in our rush. Model kindness to raise compassionate children. In a world pulling toward negativity, convene around shared values and grace rather than the “screams” that scar young minds.

3. May You Follow Your Calling

Post’s own life changed at 14 when he tutored kids in a basement. He didn't chase prestige; he followed the "soul's whisper." He suggests we find our own "ferry ride"—a place of silence to hear what we’re meant to do.

4. May You Raise Kind Children

Teaching kindness counters the cycle of global indifference. Small acts ripple outward, much like the bunny’s kindness in You Matter, Luma. Parents, your example is the greatest teacher; when you live love, your children learn to bloom.

5. May You Know the One Mind

Maternal premonitions and shared dreams point to a unified consciousness. The mind is a vast field. Embracing this interconnectedness dissolves the illusion of separation.

6. May You Cherish the Gift of Nature

In the beauty of fall leaves, we find what U.C. Berkeley Professor Dacher Keltner calls “moral beauty.” Nature reminds us of our impermanence and our interdependence. We need awe to stay human. The fall leaves the Dalai Lama mentioned aren't just scenery; they are a reminder of our interdependence.

7. May You Honor the Spirit of Freedom

Love and freedom are twins; true love liberates rather than controls. Use the “Positive Golden Rule”: contribute to the freedom of others. Lean outward to the neediest while balancing your own family.

<picture><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!TNgK!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8e6c7df6-e55f-41a3-bd73-498832fd00ce_1024x608.png" width="1024" height="608" data-attrs="{"src":"https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/8e6c7df6-e55f-41a3-bd73-498832fd00ce_1024x608.png","srcNoWatermark":null,"fullscreen":null,"imageSize":"normal","height":608,"width":1024,"resizeWidth":null,"bytes":null,"alt":"A close-up, high-angle shot of two sets of hands at a wooden table: a younger caregiver’s hand gently drops a small, smooth stone into a ceramic bowl of water, while an older, wrinkled hand rests nearby in a state of calm. A friendship fades, a conversation goes quiet, and we assume it’s proof that the relationship has run its course.

But often, that silence isn’t the end of something—it’s the symptom of a misunderstanding.

What’s interesting is that most disconnection isn’t born from conflict. It’s born from miscommunication. From mismatched meanings. From moments when one person speaks from emotion, and the other responds with logic. When we reply to hurt with reason, or to fear with facts, we create distance where we meant to build understanding.

That’s the paradox at the heart of communication: we believe we’re exchanging information, when in truth, we’re exchanging emotions.

And yet, connection isn’t about always agreeing. He swears like a sailor, hustles like he’s allergic to sleep, and yet preaches kindness like a modern-day Mr. Rogers with a caffeine addiction.

But beneath the chaos, Gary’s message in our Passion Struck conversation is surprisingly simple—and surprisingly human: if we want better leaders, happier kids, and saner workplaces, we’ve got to start teaching emotional intelligence and accountability in equal measure.

Most of us grew up in one of two camps: the “suck it up” generation that believed emotions were weakness, or the “everyone gets a trophy” generation that believed discomfort was cruelty. Gary’s point? Both are broken.

“We’ve over-coddled a generation,” he told me. “The emotional intelligence we need to talk to kids about isn’t just kindness—it’s tenacity, accountability, competitiveness.”

He’s not saying compassion doesn’t matter. He’s saying it’s incomplete without a spine.

We can’t just raise gentle kids; we need kids who can lose without collapsing, fail without self-destructing, and win without turning into jerks.

If you’re new here, The Ignited Life explores how to live with intention, courage, and meaning. And as Seth Godin shared with me in this catalytic episode of Passion Struck, solving it will require far more than individual good deeds or hopeful intentions. It demands a radical shift in how we think, lead, consume, and collaborate.

Seth joined me to discuss the heart behind one of his most important projects to date: The Carbon Almanac. It’s not just a book—it’s a global movement. A bold, data-driven collaboration created to cut through confusion and denial and help us face the climate crisis with clarity and coordinated action. It doesn’t just explain the problem—it reveals the systems we must change before time runs out.

Together, we dive into:

Listen ad free to an urgent, inspiring conversation that challenges you to lead, connect, and act before it’s too late.
